Gippsland Water’s continuing commitment to youth employment and development has again been highlighted, with eleven students to spend their summer vacation period as staff members within the organisation.

The three month employment program gives students the opportunity to work in a variety of disciplines from different workgroups within Gippsland Water. The students will learn vital skills to assist their transition into the workforce in the future, and will gain valuable experience in their field of expertise.

The students who have been given the opportunity to work at Gippsland Water during 2005/2006 are Nick Vesty (Asset Improvement), Rylee Duffus (Treatment), David Smith (Treatment), Julia Smith (Environmental and Water Quality Governance), Andrea Verberne (Public Affairs), Ellie Wallin (Major Systems), Michael Heily (Asset Planning and Development), Matthew Bollen (Farms), Tonia Cook (Resource Recovery Facility and Dutson Wastewater Group) and Aynsley Skeels (Finance).

Gippsland Water CEO John Mitchell said "Gippsland Water believes strongly in local youth development. Our organisation provides an excellent a venue for students to gain a variety of experience, skills, and knowledge in their area of study."

The students commenced in late November 2005, and will complete their time with Gippsland Water at the end of February 2006, just in time to recommence their university studies for the year.

Mr Mitchell said he recognised the contribution the vacation students had already made to the organisation since beginning their placement. "These students are undertaking a number of projects that will undoubtedly provide great benefit to Gippsland Water. They will be able to gain knowledge about the water industry by working closely with staff. This experience will prove vital when they move into the workforce in the future, and will provide them with an insight as to the career opportunities existing within this field," said Mr Mitchell.
