Gippsland Youth Get Chance To Be Heard!

Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe today congratulated local radio stations 3BBR FM and Gippsland FM on each receiving a $5,000 grant as part of the Victorian Coalition Government’s Be Heard! program.

Be Heard! aims to increase volunteering opportunities for young people whilst providing them with increased skills and career pathways in radio.

Mr Northe said 3BBR FM will use the funding to provide opportunities for on-site training and experience in production skills and broadcasting for students from Central Gippsland TAFE, Monash University Gippsland, Baw Baw Ambassadors Program and Drouin Secondary College.

Gippsland FM will use their funding to provide training and mentoring opportunities for young people in central Gippsland to develop radio content focused on local youth issues, events and programs.

"Our community radio stations are very important to locals, as they provide entertainment, news, and information on a daily basis," said Mr Northe.

"But more importantly they also give some of our younger residents the opportunity to be an active community member, and also gain some highly valued hands-on industry experience.

"It is important that young people are encouraged to get involved with community radio, to boost their work experience, gain knowledge and make contacts within the local and business community.

"I commend 3BBR FM and Gippsland FM for applying for the Be Heard! grant, and for encouraging young people to volunteer in community radio."

Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith said the successful community radio stations will receive grants to provide training and mentoring for young people to produce live-to-air shows.

"These radio stations have demonstrated a strong commitment to providing training and mentoring opportunities for young people to produce radio programs, as well as improving young people’s skills and career pathways in radio broadcasting.

"Young people who are interested in careers in the media can use these types of pathway opportunities to build their skills and networks with journalists, editors, producers and station managers.

"The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to providing young Victorians with the chance to Be Heard! on community radio, volunteer and have a positive impact in their community," Mr Smith said.
