The Wildcats started the game in trepidation boasting a thirteen-man squad opposed to a full squad from Sharks displaying determination and persistence. Rookie Reece De Goey displayed confidence once he relinquished his position as fullback stepping up to outside centre. Shawn McAvoy has proven to be a versatile player bouncing from outside centre to second row.

The leadership of captain Anthony Huxford was outstanding coming through with flying colours by settling the play and building up the forwards. Wildcats took the lead when Huxford found a break in defence to score for Brad Wright to convert.

For the next 15 minutes, Wildcats displayed a flurry of good play and ball skills. Lock Chris McRae was dubbed Wildcats ‘tackling machine’ stepped through Sharks players with ease, and it was his pace and deception that laid on the Wildcats second try of this half unconverted taking the lead to 10-0.

Southern Sharks hit back minutes later for wing Paul Boscolo and lock Wiremu to score two tries apiece consecutively before going into the break at half time, Sharks 16-10.

In a free flowing second half Wildcats came out a determined and strengthened side holding Sharks out for all of this half as the play seesawed from one end of the field to the other.

Shawn McAvoy powered over to score two tries converted after a great back line movement, equalling the score 16-16. In a matter of minutes, from a succession of three offloads, Wildcats five-eighth Garth Campbell scored for Brad Wright to convert taking the lead 22-16.

As luck would have it, Sharks hit back for a scoring rampage in the last ten minutes of play battening down the hatches to hold a 36 – 22 lead.
