'Tis The Season To Recycle

Whether it is Christmas on a budget or a Christmas of splurging, Bass Coast Shire Council is asking all residents to undertake some simple actions to reduce their environmental impact this festive season.

Planet Ark has created The 12 Do’s of Christmas (PDF 277kb) available on its popular website RecyclingNearYou.com.au; a fact sheet with simple tips about reducing waste over the holidays.

RecyclingNearYou is Australia’s most comprehensive household recycling directory. It lists drop off and collection locations for items including e-waste like batteries and mobile phones in the Bass Coast area. The site also has information on how to recycle leftovers and food scraps, foil trays, aluminium cans, custard cartons, Christmas trees, cards and wrapping paper.

"This time of celebration is traditionally accompanied by an increase in eating, drinking and spending," says Felicity Sist, Council’s Infrastructure Director.

"Waste is one of the biggest environmental issues at Christmas but a few simple actions can make a big difference and limiting your impact on the environment."

According to the "State of Australian Cities (1) " report released in October, recent national figures show that in 2006–07, Australia generated 43.7 million tonnes of waste, 48 per cent of which went to landfill. Since then, governments have gradually adopted new legislation and strategies to increase recycling rates and to change community values, behaviour and attitudes to waste.

"Reducing waste begins with planning your grocery list, buying presents that will be used and will last and then recycling whatever waste is left over," says Planet Ark Spokesperson Rebecca Gilling.

"The RecyclingNearYou.com.au website has helpful tips on these, as well as information on recycling all sorts of items."

With consumption levels at their highest at the onset of the festive season, Planet Ark is reminding Australians that sensible shopping can be beneficial for the budget too. Planning ahead and shopping for what you need helps both the environment and the hip pocket," says Ms Gilling.

"With the average Australian household now spending $204 (2) on groceries each week, families are literally wasting money when they throw food away. Unwanted and unused gifts are a waste of money and resources too."
