Morwell Recreation Reserve ovals to be reconstructed

A $200,000 Victorian Government grant and $100,000 council contribution to improve the Morwell Recreation Reserve has been jointly announced by the Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins MP, and Latrobe City.

A $200,000 Victorian Government grant and $100,000 council contribution to improve the Morwell Recreation Reserve main oval playing surface and the creation of a turf wicket bench on an upgraded Keegan Street oval, has been jointly announced by the Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins MP, and Latrobe City.

Latrobe City Councillor, Darrell White, said the surface at the Morwell Recreation Reserve is subject to a very heavy workload with two football clubs - Morwell Football Netball Club and Gippsland Power, playing and training at the ground; together with the Morwell Cricket Club and a number of one-off events.

"This has resulted in the surface being unable to be maintained to the high standard required, particularly for major competitions," Cr White said.

"This reconstruction will see the complete removal of the turf and undersurface to the drainage lines at both ovals, and a rebuild with materials that will result in good drainage, and a first-class couch grass playing surface," Cr White said.

Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins, who announced the state government $200,000 contribution, said up-to-date facilities are incredibly important to the atmosphere of a club and the service they can provide to locals who love getting out there and playing a game they love.

"The Victorian Government joined with the AFL in 2004 to form the Country Football and Netball Program, a $10 million grant opportunity for country clubs to improve facilities for players, coaches and supporters.

"This year the Victorian Government increased its contribution to the program from $2 million to $8 million, to help more Victorians get involved in sport and stay connected to their communities."

"However, this is the first example of the program delivering such a substantial boost to a local club."

The AFL has contributed $2 million to the program from its Facilities Development Reserve, with Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Demetriou, saying it will provide a significant benefit to regional communities.

"Local football and netball clubs in regional and rural areas give people the chance to play sport and become an active member of the community, so it’s important to support the great job they do," Mr Demetriou said.

"I would also like to thank Tattersall’s for contributing $300,000 from its TipStar AFL sponsorship to rural sporting facilities development."

"The Country Football and Netball Program is a great way to recognise the hard work put in by everyone involved in the club, and to help them grow into the future," Mr Jenkins added.

"Past grants have helped clubs make a range of improvements including ground resurfacing, lighting and facility upgrades, and the development of new netball courts.

"This shows what great results can be achieved when the Government and local communities work together."
