There are currently 65 firefighters working on mopping up operations on a number of fires that have been brought under control in the Gippsland region. Fires near Sale, Heyfield, Cann River, Yarram and Erica were brought under control over the weekend by crews from the Department of Sustainability and Environment, the Department of Primary Industries and Parks Victoria and the Country Fire Authority.

Regional Fire Manager David Tainsh said that the fires in the Mullundung State Forest particularly, are being monitored over the next few days of warm weather.

One of the fires in the north east of the region, started by lightning strikes last week, has burned out 4500ha in remote and rugged terrain 20kms north west of Benambra. This fire is being attacked by air and ground crews from the Departments of Sustainability and Environment, Primary Industries and Parks Victoria in another jointly managed suppression effort.

"The Department is also working closely with the CFA to ensure that communities in the Benambra and Omeo areas are kept informed of the current fire situation," Mr Tainsh said.
