Latrobe City Council’s draft Disability Action Plan aims to support people with a disability to have equitable access to infrastructure, services and opportunities within the municipality. Council is inviting feedback on the draft Plan to ensure it fits the community’s needs and desires.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said the draft Disability Action Plan aimed to reduce barriers and improve access and inclusion for people with a disability.

"Latrobe City Council first developed and adopted a Disability Action Plan in 1996. Consultation for the development of the current draft Plan started in January 2018 and involved a range of stakeholders, including people with disability, their carers and local service providers. Discussions focused on emerging issues and areas of improvement for people with disability in our municipality.

"During the engagement process, the community had access to a number of opportunities to participate, including an online survey, two focus groups and a Community Forum. Thoroughness is key during the consultation phase. We must make sure our draft Plan reflects the conversations we have," Cr White said.

"The draft Plan has now been delivered and outlines Council’s commitment to recognising, valuing and supporting people with disability. The Plan looks to document the necessary steps needed to further promote participation, access and inclusion in Latrobe City. We encourage you to read the draft Plan and to see if it matches your expectations, your vision for what services and support is needed, what opportunities can be created and how access can be improved within our municipality.

The draft Disability Action Plan is available for viewing during office hours at any of our service centres and you can provide your feedback either in writing or by email. The closing date is Monday 11 June. Once the feedback has been collated it will be presented to Council and if you made a submission, you will be invited to attend the meeting and speak on your submission, should you wish.

"Your thoughts and opinions are valid and valued – please provide them," Cr White concluded.
