Reconciliation To Continue

Wellington Shire Council Is Taking Action To Ensure The Reconciliation Process Continues Beyond This Week’S Special Activities.

By Wellington Shire Council - 1st June 2007 - Back to News

"Reconciliation Week is an important event in our calendar, but it should be seen as an ongoing process," said Cr Beth Ripper, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

"This year is a special time as it marks the 40th anniversary of the national referendum which finally acknowledged indigenous people as citizens of Australia," said Cr Ripper.

"That was a very important event in Australian history"

"I would like to acknowledge the tenacity and courage of the community leaders who drove the movement that resulted in that momentous ‘yes’ vote." said Cr Ripper.

"It is important that the community continues to build on that great advance."

Robert Farnham, Chair of Ramahyuck, a Gippsland Aboriginal and community organisation based in Sale, supported the call for ongoing community action on Reconciliation.

"We have some terrific events for this year’s Reconciliation Week, but it would be great to see year round community activity.

"It is important that we see Reconciliation as something practical that everyone can be involved in.

"It is not just an annual celebration," said Mr Farnham.

Wellington Shire Council has organised a joint meeting with Ramahyuck for September to further develop practical activities to support Reconciliation.

"We look forward to working with Council and the broader community in developing the momentum of Reconciliation," said Mr Farnham.

The Shire has also nominated two local projects for the RMF Reconciliation Recognition Awards.

The projects are:

  • Wulgunggo Ngalu Learning Place, as an alternative to the prison system; and
  • The Ramahyuck Family Practice Medical Clinic.

Wulgunggo Ngalu Learning Place is being built on the former Won Wron prison site located 10km from Yarram. It will be a culturally appropriate residential ‘learning place’ for Indigenous men who are undertaking Community Based Orders. Participants will volunteer to attend Wulgunggo Ngalu.

The Ramahyuck Gippsland Family is a bulk billing Clinic which caters for the health needs of the Ramahyuck and broader Wellington communities. The Practice identifies with the cultural background of its patients, particularly those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background but provides an efficient and effective holistic health service available to all.
