Fertilising Dairy Pastures Program Coming To South Gippsland

A free program called Fertilising Dairy Pastures will be held in Leongatha starting on Wednesday, June 17, 2009.

By Department of Primary Industries - 7th May 2009 - Back to News

The program has been designed to assist farmers in making confident decisions about their fertiliser needs.

With the current combination of high fertiliser prices and low milk price, it is very important that every dollar spent on fertiliser is clearly targeted and effective in meeting your production goals.

At times such as these, it may mean having short-term goals, keeping your fertility ticking along with your budget in mind, while also having long-term goals based on regular soil tests and your production goals.

Soil test results are the key to nutrient planning as they can help you:

§ identify any soil problems, which could be reducing the effectiveness of your fertiliser;

§ identify variation in fertility across the farm allowing you to save some fertiliser in high fertility areas and target areas of real need;

§ plan what to apply to maintain areas of adequate fertility and the applications needed to progressively increase fertility in other areas as your budget allows; and

§ develop ways to incorporate dairy effluent into your fertiliser plan.

Having decided on your fertiliser needs, the program will cover what is the best buy for your money based on the cost per kilogram or tonne of nutrient applied.

As part of the Dairy Extension Centre’s suite of training programs, Fertilising Dairy Pastures is designed to help farmers develop their own farm nutrient plans to achieve the best fertiliser cost options.

The latest results from DPI fertiliser research will also be incorporated into the delivery of the program. DPI’s Pasture and Conservation Specialist, Frank Mickan, recently helped to update the program and will be co-delivering it.

One course day per week spread over three weeks will be followed by a number of practical on-farm days plus the opportunity to get individual assistance in developing a fertiliser plan for your farm.

To register for the program or get more information, please contact David Shambrook at DPI Leongatha on 5662 9913 or email: david.shambrook@dpi.vic.gov.au by Monday, 29 May, 2009.
