Mutual benefits from councillor visits

Baw Baw Shire councillors are currently visiting local secondary schools to build relationships and provide young people an avenue to access council.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 24th July 2006 - Back to News

Council made a resolution in March to support the development of an itinerary of councillor visits to secondary schools within their ward as a result of Baw Baw Shire's Youth Charter, according to council Mayor Ian Clark.

"Councillor visits give students the opportunity to meet their councillors and discuss issues important to them and their school.

"It also gives the councillor the opportunity to meet with young people, who are often a silent majority, and build relationships with them.

"Conversations with councillors have been relaxed and fun with some very pertinent questions coming from the students about topical issues associated with council," said Cr Clark.

Councillors Adam Tyson and Dick van Leeuwen recently visited Chairo Christian School in Drouin and according to assistant head of senior school, Pete Wells it was a positive exchange for both parties.

"This initiative seems mutually beneficial, putting councillors in touch with youth from the community and providing school students with insight into another level of leadership.

"It is encouraging to see leaders of different ages and from different fields sharing ideas on how to positively serve and influence their respective communities.

"Chairo certainly appreciated the opportunity to be part of the program and would like to thank the councillors and council’s community development coordinator Leslie Smith for making themselves available," said Mr Wells.

Councillors have discussed a number of issues with students including responsibilities associated with being a councillor, how items get on the council agenda and why councillors became involved with council.
