Tree Removal Error Sparks Immediate Investigation

Latrobe City Council has initiated an immediate investigation into the removal of a pin oak tree at the Breed Street entrance to Henry Street Traralgon.

By Latrobe City - 24th April 2007 - Back to News

Removal of a second tree was underway when council intervened to halt further damage.

Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said the removal of the Henry Street tree and damage to a second tree was in error and in contravention of council’s undertakings to the community.

"This is an unfortunate mistake, and given council’s assurances that full public consultation will take place before any decision on the future of the Henry Street is made, is one that I’m extremely disappointed has happened," Mr Buckley said.

"Our preliminary enquiries have revealed that a tree removal contractor undertook work on two trees in Henry Street that abut a Breed Street address. As a consequence, I have ordered a full investigation into how this could have happened and why.

"I can only convey council’s apology on this matter and assure residents and the wider community that there was nothing sinister in this action and that it was a genuine mistake.

"Council remains committed to engaging the community in discussions regarding the future of Henry Street trees and as part of this process a public meeting will be held this Thursday night. The meeting will be held at the Traralgon Civic Centre in Kay Street at 7.30pm," Mr Buckley concluded.
