Apex Park And Railway Station Improvement Works

Bass Coast Shire Council is about to commence works on further upgrades to Apex Park in Wonthaggi.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 22nd August 2005 - Back to News

This section of works will include widening the footpath from Murray Street to the Railway Station building, path lighting, uplights and the replacement of a number of trees.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Senior Design Engineer, Murray Kent, said that the works are being funded by Council as part of the Civic Spine project that is quickly taking shape in Wonthaggi.

"The improvements and streetscape works from the top of McBride Avenue down to Murray Street have generated a positive buzz by regulars and visitors to Wonthaggi.

"Staff working on the project have received many compliments on their work, which has both brightened the street and improved pedestrian safety."

Mr Kent said that the Apex Park works, which are about to commence, will also include the unfortunate replacement of a number of existing mahogany gum trees on the advice of a qualified arborist.

"Ideally we would have liked to retain these large mahoganies but unfortunately the majority of the trees are diseased, which poses genuine risks to public safety from the unpredictability of falling limbs.

"Ten of the existing trees will be removed over the coming weeks and replaced with advanced trees of a more suitable variety.

"The old picnic tables and seats will also be replaced," Mr Kent said.

Railway Station Restoration

Following the works in Apex Park, Bass Coast Shire Council will be commencing restoration works to the Railway Station building.

"Council was successful in obtaining a State Government grant of $170,000 through Heritage Victoria to assist in upgrading the Railway Station building," Mr Kent said.

The works will include re-roofing, improved drainage, minor structural works, electrical works, floodlights, repairs and painting.

"The building has fallen into disrepair over many years and has been prone to vandalism in the past.

"The improvements will raise the profile of this historic building and will be a contributing reminder of Wonthaggi’s proud history.

"The Railway Station played a very important role in Victoria’s economy during the coal mining years early last century. The building is now home to many old and very interesting relics and memorabilia of the history of Wonthaggi and district.

"The improvement works will enable the building to be open to the public on a more regular basis," Mr Kent said.

Additional funds will be needed in the future to improve the interior of the building.

Council intends to have the works completed by the end of the year.
