Bass Coast Shire Council officers had the chance to test drive an electric car that is part of a Department of Transport Electric Vehicle program.

Council Environment Officer, Liza Price, organised for the car to be on display as part of the Energy Innovation Festival.

"The car is 100 per cent electric, only running off batteries that are under the floor of the car," explained Ms Price.

"It’s charged using a 15 watt electric cord, similar to that used by a caravan.

"There was certainly a lot of interest from the public in the vehicle."

Over 6000 households across Victoria, including 40 from Bass Coast, have applied to be part of the trial. Sixty households will be given an electric car to use for three months over the course of the year. A further round of applications will take place at the end of 2011.

The car takes eight hours to fully charge the battery or can do a quick charge in 30 minutes, which charges the battery to 80 per cent.

When charged using 100 per cent accredited greenpower the emissions from this car are zero.

"We made it from Narre Warren to Wonthaggi on a full charge of battery," said Ms Price.

"While it’s still being trialled, not everyone can access an electric car. To reduce the impact your vehicle has on the environment think about down-sizing, selecting a diesel car and getting it serviced regularly to make sure it’s running efficiently."
