Food for thought!

Wellington Shire Council has implemented new, more comprehensive Food Safety Standards covering the operation of 'temporary food premises' such as community event stalls, as part of an Australia-wide drive to reduce risks of food poisoning.

Wellington Shire Council has implemented new, more comprehensive Food Safety Standards covering the operation of ‘temporary food premises’ such as community event stalls, as part of an Australia-wide drive to reduce risks of food poisoning.

Each year in Australia over two million people fall ill from the food they eat. At the same time there are more community organisations raising funds through the sale of food from ‘temporary food premises’ such as stalls, stands, barbecues or mobile food vans.

While there is no particular concern with Wellington, and the Council supports fundraising efforts by community groups, it has introduced the new standards in the interests of best practice, and as part of a State and national effort to ensure consistency of food laws.

Building on the provisions of the 1984 Food Act, there are some new requirements covering:

  • food handling skills and knowledge;
  • health and hygiene;
  • food handling controls; and
  • food safety programs.

Anyone looking to run a ‘temporary food premises’ can find guidelines on the new requirements, together with an application form for an operators permit, on the Council’s website www.wellington.vic.gov.au - signposted under ‘What’s New’ on the home page. Permits need to be obtained at least 14 days before an event and are free to those organising charitable and not-for-profit functions.

More information is available from the Council’s Environmental Health Officers on 1300 366 244.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "There are very few incidents of food poisoning in the Shire thanks in no small part to the very responsible, conscientious attitude taken by operators of temporary food premises. The aim of the new standards is to help ensure that the situation remains this way. At the end of the day everyone stands to benefit."
