Gippsland Water Refutes Privatisation ClaimsGippsland Water has strongly denied recent claims that they have sold off part of their business to a private company. By Gippsland Water - 6th April 2001 - Back to News Gippsland Water has strongly denied recent claims that they have sold off part of their business to a private company. This response comes as a result of reports in the past two days alleging Gippsland Water no longer owns it’s bulk water supply system.
Gippsland Water Chief Executive Officer John Mitchell said, “These allegations are completely untrue and profoundly disappointing to all the staff and Board of Gippsland Water. Unfortunately it appears a particular segment of the media has been supplied with information that is not factual. Under no circumstance would Gippsland Water consider ‘selling off’ any part of its operations and indeed the Bracks State Government would not contemplate any such action.”
Gippsland Water, like many Government agencies, presently manage service contracts with the private sector, which in turn employs local people to carry out these tasks. The bulk water supply system provides water to Gippsland Water’s major clients and industrial customers. The existing services contract is to be strengthened to ensure a greater security of supply outcome. This is a key requirement of our new Strategic Plan which reflects the concerns of our major clients and customers.
Chairman of the Gippsland Water Board, Mr Richard Elkington was also quick to deny any claims of privatisation. “Under no circumstance are parts of Gippsland Water’s assets for sale. As has been stated in the media, the core functions of an organisation such as Gippsland Water are owned on behalf of the people of Gippsland. We are responding now to ensure all members of our community are kept informed and provided with factual information.”
Mr Elkington also pointed out Gippsland Water’s commitment to the people of the Gippsland region. “Whilst over the past three years we have seen businesses across Gippsland and Victoria downsizing, Gippsland Water has increased their employee base by almost 20%. I know for a fact that our organisation is particularly proud of this statistic”.
Mr Mitchell concluded by stressing Gippsland Water’s commitment to being honest with all of its customers. “It is unfortunate this misinformation has caused so much concern to some of our customers and our staff. We welcome all comments from the public and urge any person who have any concerns to contact us directly and we will be pleased to provide an honest and actual response.”
