Bastion Point boat ramp decision welcomed: Ingram

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed East Gippsland Shire Council’s decision to endorse Option 3 as the preferred option for the upgrade of the Bastion Point ocean access ramp at Mallacoota.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 25th August 2005 - Back to News

"Council’s decision will allow the DSE and the State Government to review the EES documents and release the proposal for public submissions and comment," Mr Ingram said.

"The current report is the most extensive study and has built on the six previous reports and studies into the ramp proposal, which was started with the Port of Melbourne Authority report back in 1988.

"It’s clear from the information provided by the council that they have made the correct decision.

"Providing blue water access at Bastion Point is in the best interest of the community and is supported by the significant majority in Mallacoota, as highlighted by a community ballot in 2000.

"This decision is consistent with previous ocean access reports, the East Gippsland Planning and Development Strategy, and is also consistent with the election commitments that I made during both the 1999 and 2002 elections.

"I believe that the current mix of boats, swimmers and surfers at the existing ramp site is unsustainable on the grounds of community and personal safety.

"The existing situation with siltation of the ramp has restricted the public recreational usage of the area as it provides unacceptable risk of injury to people and damage to boats and vehicles.

"Moving the boat ramp from its current position to the proposed new site will remove some of the existing conflict and risk, handing back the nursery surfing area and the swimming beach to the community.

"I will be working with the government and the shire to ensure that the project goes ahead, subject to the approval of the EES process.

"I encourage interested members of the community to look objectively at the EES documents, and to participate during the public comment stage," Mr Ingram concluded.
