Consult before removing native vegetation

Wellington Shire Council is reminding all landowners and landholders that a planning permit is required to remove, destroy or lop native vegetation on private and public property.

By Wellington Shire Council - 2nd September 2004 - Back to News

The message comes as part of its ongoing environmental awareness drive.

Before any work on native vegetation is tackled it is important to consult with the council’s environmental planner to ensure that it would not infringe the Wellington Planning Scheme. Any infringement could result in a fine or enforcement action.

Approval is required for works on public and private land, including roadsides and crown land. However there are some exemptions relating to various farming and domestic vegetation removal practices.

When planning to remove, destroy or lop native vegetation on land that you do not own, permission from the landowner or manager is mandatory, and roadside clearing is discouraged where possible.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "As Victoria’s third largest Shire, Wellington has significant amounts of vegetation and natural resources to protect and preserve. The council is committed to promoting a high level of environmental awareness within the community and ensuring that our residents are kept well-informed about how they can work in partnership with us to achieve this goals."

More information is available by telephoning Wellington’s Environmental Planner Colleen Murphy on 1300 366 244.
