Peter Hall presents taxi petition

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Province PETER HALL presented a petition this week in Parliament on behalf of taxi users and taxi companies in the Gippsland electorate.

By Peter Hall - 20th October 2005 - Back to News

"The petition calls on the Bracks Government to recognise that country taxis are a proxy form of public transport and provide an essential service to our country communities," Mr. Hall said.

The petition also requests that the Government immediately introduce measures that will lift the subsidised operation of services to the level given to Melbourne based taxis and to initiate reforms that will enhance the viability of country taxi services so that they can continue to meet the needs of country Victorians.

"The taxi industry, especially in rural and regional Victoria provides a vital service but the Bracks Government is hell bent on penalising those vulnerable people in our community who rely heavily on taxis particularly the multi purpose taxis," Mr. Hall said.

"The Bracks Government has launched an attacked on pensioners, health care card holders and some war veterans by slugging them an extra $80 on vehicle registrations. The price of fuel must also be taken into consideration and again the Bracks Government is failing to show any leadership to ease the burden on country motorists."

"The Bracks Government is being kept afloat by record levels of income from land tax, stamp duty, police fines and pokies revenue as well as GST revenue and it is about time some of this windfall was paid back to the community."

"I support our taxi industry and I call on the Bracks Government to act now to ease the burden on rural and regional Victorians," Mr. Hall said.
