Ingram supports land tax motion in Parliament

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has supported the Liberal Party’s motion in Parliament calling for the State Government to provide genuine land tax relief as a matter of urgency.

In Parliament last week, Mr Ingram described the current land tax impost on business as a "serious problem" and recognised the work of John Ribbands from the Metung Hotel in highlighting the issue.

Mr Ingram said that he had first raised the issue in December last year with the State Treasurer John Brumby requesting that the government addresses the impact of land tax escalations in coastal areas due to the land price boom, which has accrued over the past few years.

"Businesses and individuals have been caught with ever spiralling land tax bills after significant hikes in land valuations during the past three or four years," Mr Ingram said.

"If we allow the continuation of the current trends in land valuation and land tax impost on prime coastal land, it would mean the only purpose with sufficient turnover for which a landowner could justify the properties use would be multistorey unit developments."

Mr Ingram also used the opportunity to call for a review of the current taxation system which is counter productive.

"The average working Australian is severely overtaxed with multiple taxes that really do not encourage saving or sensible development," he said.

"The GST was supposed to reduce the reliance of a range of other taxes and charges, yet we have a plethora of state and federal taxes which apply tax on other taxes and restrict investment business development and personal savings.

"The government has said it will make some changes to the land tax regime in the upcoming state Budget, but the question is it will go far enough.

"Land tax is a major issue and it is essential that the government addresses the problem to encourage investment and better utilisation of our land for the future," Mr Ingram concluded.
