All but one of the fires in Gippsland, including three new fires ignited by lightning north of Orbost yesterday afternoon have been contained or brought under control.

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 23rd November 2007 - Back to News

Regional Duty Officer David Rash said good work by crews in trying conditions has left the Black Jack Gully fire, 14 kilometres east of Buldah in far East Gippsland the only one still to contain.

"This fire is in the most remote, inaccessible terrain and the rappel teams have been invaluable in stopping it spread in the weather conditions we had yesterday and last night," Mr Rash said.

"Crews are confident of getting it contained by late this afternoon."

There are currently around 200 people working on the Gippsland fires in firefighting teams and Incident Management teams, supported by aircraft, firefighting vehicles and dozers.

More resources are on standby as today’s predicted weather conditions and the possibility of further lightning strikes increase the risk of more fires in the region.
