Indigenous Artefacts Stop Pathway In Its Tracks

Bass Coast Shire Council has had to temporarily suspend the construction of the Inverloch Foreshore Shared Pathway due to the uncovering of potential indigenous artefacts yesterday, including a bone.

Council’s Acting Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente, said the Council would have to undertake a cultural heritage assessment before any decision would be made on a continuation or change of works.

"We have since installed temporary barricades.

"At this stage we don’t know when works will be able to recommence, however, we will keep the community updated," advised Mr Piasente.

Council had engaged an indigenous representative to supervise the excavation works in case indigenous artefacts were found.

The current works include a 700m shared concrete pathway between Venus St and Abbott St, Inverloch as well as the construction of a car parking area midway along and a further car park at the Venus St end.

VicRoads is contributing $116,000 for the path and Council $140,000 for the two car parks.

"The path will provide a link for cyclists and pedestrians, and connects features such as the recently installed BBQ and soon to be constructed fitness centre and car parks.

"Works commenced this week and would normally take six to eight weeks," continued Mr Piasente.
