Wellington welcomes $370,000 funding for urban improvement schemes

Wellington Shire Council has won $170,000 in Pride of Place grants from State Government for town improvement initiatives designed to bring significant benefits to the communities of Dargo, Rosedale and Sale.

By Wellington Shire Council - 17th November 2003 - Back to News

The Council is contributing $155,000 to the initiatives. In addition Wellington is allocating $40,000 to a joint program with neighbouring East Gippsland Shire Council to prepare a strategic plan guiding the development of 16 coastal towns – with this project attracting a separate Pride of Place grant of $200,000.

Improvement initiatives for Rosedale, which are due to be completed by December 2004 include:

  • planting trees along Princes Highway in the town centre, adding to the 110 already planted, and enhancing the appearance of the streetscape;
  • installing a number of pedestrian crossing points in the centre of the town;
  • completing installation of a number of rose arbors;
  • commissioning an artistic sign detailing the historical significance of Rosedale;
  • upgrading and enhancing the car park next to the bottleshop along Princes Highway to create an attractive, relaxing outdoor eating area with seating, paving, plants and plants;
  • constructing a number of porticos over existing shops on the north side of the Princes Highway adjacent to Hood Street.

Initiatives for Sale include streetscape improvements along the Princes Highway at the western entry to the city, between Reeve Street and Raymond Street. The program involves:

  • planting additional trees along the median strip, along with alternate bands of low level plants and lawn;
  • installing lighting that will enhance the night-time ambience of the immediate area;
  • planting Canary Island Palms at the corner of Raymond Street and Foster Street;
  • modifying the kerb at the corner of Raymond Street and Foster Street to make it more user-friendly for pedestrians to cross;
  • installing new city entry and directional signage;
  • installing a suitably symbolic work of sculpture to act as a landmark for this entry point to the city centre;

The focus for Dargo will be on formulating a strategic plan to guide the future development and revitalisation of the town, which is sensitive to preserving and enhancing its character and heritage. This will involve close consultation with the local community and will look at the streetscape and providing an improved sense of entry to the town. It will also consider connections to the Dargo High Plains and the potential to develop tourism.

Similarly, the East Gippsland and Wellington Coastal Design and Strategic framework will guide the development of 16 coastal towns, eight of them in Wellington, ensuring that a consistent approach is taken along the coast in both Shires.

The eight towns covered in Wellington are: Loch Sport; Golden Beach/Paradise Beach; The Honeysuckles; Seaspray; Woodside Beach; McLoughlins Beach; Manns Beach; and Robertsons Beach. Again there will be close local consultation on the drafting of an environmentally sensitive strategic plan to guide their development. This will cover such issues as identifying town boundaries, protecting and enhancing the coastal environment and landscape, location and design guidelines for buildings, and identifying and enhancing tourism opportunities.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "We are very grateful to the Victorian Government for these Pride of Place grants which should provide a notable and welcome boost to the local towns involved, offering the potential for exciting development within a controlled framework, and with close community involvement. The funding will go a significant way to help enhance their local character and heritage, as well as attracting further investment and activity which will benefit their local economies and that of the Shire as a whole. Just as important will be the contribution made to developing a greater sense of local pride."
