Port Of Sale Features At Melbourne Boat Show

Wellington Shire Council grabbed the chance to showcase the new-look Port of Sale precinct to thousands of visitors attending the recent 2005 Melbourne Boat Show.

The Port was promoted as the Western Entrance to the Gippsland Lakes - a significant historic asset with the potential to become a major tourism drawcard for the city of Sale, Wellington and the Gippsland region.

Stage 1 of the multi-million-dollar Port of Sale redevelopment opened at the end of last year, with key features including:

· 130 metres of timber board walks and 560 metres of concrete paths to open up accessibility to the port area;

· an upgrade of the existing wharf;

· a new floating jetty and two ten metre long, multi-purpose, recreational jetties;

· colourful street lighting designed to add to the night-time ambience and safety of the precinct;

· new picnic facilities, toilet block and barbecue area;

· landscaping improvements with additional garden beds and trees.

It is complemented in the Port precinct area by restaurants, the Gippsland Art Gallery.Sale and the highly successful, award-winning Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre - which opened 18 months ago and provides a suitably impressive gateway to the revamped Port of Sale.

There are plans for further environmentally-sympathetic development of the Port precinct over the next few years to include provision for apartments, hotel accommodation and a new, much larger marina with the capacity to accommodate 120 boats. Also being proposed are convention and retail facilities such as a ships chandlery, cafes, restaurants and tavern.

The Port of Sale promotion at the Melbourne Boat Show was led by Wellington Shire Council’s Tourism Officer Frank Norden as part of a Gippsland Lakes stand also featuring other locations in Gippsland including Paynesville, Loch Sport, Metung, Twin Rivers and Lakes Entrance.

Wellington enjoys a significant visitor spend in excess of $80 million per year from tourists and it is hoped the opening of new facilities like the Port of Sale will boost this even further.
