Stockyard Point redevelopment on track

Wellington Shire Council met with the Port Albert Progress Association last week to update the group on the progress of the Stockyard Point redevelopment.

$1.3 million has been earmarked for the Stockyard Point facelift, an initiative identified in the 2002 Port Albert Master Plan.

Wellington’s Director for Strategic Initiatives Bruce Graham: "The meeting with the Port Albert Progress Association went well. We discussed the planning permit Council needs to get in place before the works can proceed. We also discussed the design elements of the project."

Mr Graham said the planning permit application was advertised on July 20 and has been referred to several authorities including VicRoads, Gippsland Ports and Council’s heritage advisor for comment.

"We encourage the community to make submissions and they have 14 days after the permit is advertised to do so; referral authorities have 28 days to submit their comments. Once the submission dates have closed, the Council will then make a decision on the matter."

The redevelopment of Stockyard Point and the wharf area aims to capture the historic fishing village feel of the port, which was a thriving maritime centre and the ‘Gateway to Gippsland’ during the mid-1800s when cattle, sheep, wool and gold were exported from the town.

Mr Graham says the redevelopment of Stockyard Point is a great project that will re-energise the town.

"This redevelopment is set to make the Port Albert township even more of a drawcard for tourists as well as for those looking to relocate to the area for a sea-change."

Highlights of the project include: creating a seawall pathway, relocating the toilet block, undergrounding the powerlines, erecting new lighting, providing new street furniture and planter boxes and generally making the area more attractive and accessible for the community.

Mr Graham said the priority and timing of works would depend on commercial negotiations in relation to the building of the wharf.

"As the Council has always stated, the major aim with this project is to ensure that any development in the future is consistent with the needs of the local community and in keeping with the township’s character."

The $1.3 million project funding will be contributed by the State Government, through the Regional Infrastructure development Fund, the Federal Government, through the Sustainable Regions programme, Wellington Shire Council and Gippsland Ports.
