Have your say on Victorian Police Community Sentiment Survey by 30 April 2023

Melina Bath encourages residents in Eastern Victoria to voice their opinions on community safety via an open consultation on Engage Victoria.

The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Region is encouraging residents to have their say on community safety in their local area. Ms Bath said Engage Victoria has an open consultation to gauge community sentiment about Victoria Police and local safety and priorities. "The rise in crime, anti-social behaviour and lawlessness across eastern Victoria is one of the most prevalent concerns raised with my electorate office," said Ms Bath.

Survey informs policing

Ms Bath said, "The survey is an opportunity for residents to deliver a strong message to the Andrews government on crime. By sharing their specific concerns and experiences residents can have a say about police resourcing and safety priorities for their region."

"The survey examines safety at home and in public and asks for input on programs that could be implemented to improve community safety in your local area," said Ms Bath.

Residents voice concerns

Ms Bath said the Crime Statistics Agency 2022 report shows a significant increase in crime involving justice procedures offences since Daniel Andrews became Premier in 2014. "Justice procedures offences include breaches of community based sentences, breaking of intervention orders, family violence orders and court orders."

"Under Labor, justice procedures offences have risen 85 per cent in the Bass Coast, 129 per cent in Cardinia, 148 per cent in Casey, 186 per cent in South Gippsland and 205 per cent in the Baw Baw Shire. Crimes against the person* have also increased over the past eight years including 37 per cent in the Bass Coast, 56.4 per cent in Cardinia, 55 per cent in South Gippsland, 50.7 per cent in Casey and 50.5 per cent in Baw Baw Shire."

"While our frontline police do a wonderful job they are however, significantly under resourced, under pressure and hamstrung by red tape. Last financial year 700 officers walked away from the force compared to 200 the year prior - this loss in experienced frontline police officers further compounds community safety and crime. Given the vital importance of keeping people safe, I'm encouraging everyone to take five minutes to complete this important survey." Ms Bath said.
