Immunise For Life

Bass Coast Shire Council is reminding residents about the importance of continuing immunisation throughout life and not just during childhood and school.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 22nd October 2007 - Back to News

This reminder is a part of Council’s Immunisation Month message. Bass Coast Environmental Health Officer, Carl Gheller, says that immunisation against preventable diseases has to be ongoing, if we want to stop these diseases from emerging within our communities.

"Immunisation is particularly important for young adults planning to start or who have started a family," said Mr Gheller.

"It is also important for people travelling overseas to high risk countries, people working and volunteering with vulnerable community members (children, elderly and unwell) and people playing contact sports."

2007 has seen the introduction of a new funded vaccine aimed at preventing cervical cancer in women.

"The vaccine is available to young women aged 18 to 26 years (inclusive) along with being offered to secondary school females through a school immunisation program," confirmed Mr Gheller.

"The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is available at all Bass Coast community immunisation sessions and the local GP clinics."

Immunisation month, organised by the Gippsland Immunisation Reference Group (GIRG), is aimed at increasing the community’s awareness on the importance of immunisation throughout life and of being immunised on time.

Routine immunisations such as HPV, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chicken Pox, Adult Diphtheria and Tetanus and others are available through Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community Immunisation Sessions. For travel vaccines, including adult Hepatitis A and B, residents should contact their own GP or a travel clinic.

The Bass Coast Shire Council Immunisation team can also assist with enquiries in relation to your immunisation history (only for vaccines administered by Shire).

Further enquiries in relation to adult and child immunisation, including session times, can be directed to the Environmental Health team on 1300 BCOAST (1300 226 278).
