The research was conducted by the council’s Economic Development Unit and commissioned by the Federal Department of Tourism.

Further ongoing research shows that the typical Wellington visitor is aged 45-55, travels as a couple, will stay between 1-3 days and is particularly interested in wildlife, National Parks, museums and galleries, eating out and general sightseeing.

The council injects approximately $300,000 to support the local tourism industry each year and has a strong presence at tourism and trade shows in Melbourne, Tasmania and Sydney to promote Wellington to potential visitors.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "All this research reiterates the substantial part tourism plays in our local economy and represents an exciting sector of growth. The Wellington tourism industry is rapidly expanding with the development of new accommodation and facilities in towns including Port Albert, Heyfield and Dargo and the expansion of wineries and improved facilities along the 90 Mile Beach.

"The council is constantly developing ways to promote the diversity of attractions across Wellington, with new tourism guides and maps being released regularly and an increase in the number of events within the shire."
