New Community Safety Committee

Victoria Police will auspice a new community safety committee in Bass Coast.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 12th August 2009 - Back to News

The new committee will replace the Summer Safety Planning Committee and will have a year round focus.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community Safety Manager, Peter Laydon, said the purpose of the committee is to get agencies with an interest in community safety working effectively together.

"Council will continue to be involved with the committee and provide administrative assistance where required," explained Mr Laydon.

Inspector Brian Curley of the Bass Coast Police Service area said it made sense that the Police auspice the committee as they have a major role in community safety planning and responding to dangerous and anti-social behaviour.

"Public disorder and anti-social behaviour are complex social issues," said Inspector Curley.

"Police are only part of the solution. If we want to solve this problem in Bass Coast, we need assistance from the community.

"One of the first steps is to recognise that we all have a role to play in stopping anti-social behaviour."

The new committee allows for more community input, through access to over 400 community representatives on a year round basis from all areas of the shire.

"These representatives also have access to many other community and sporting groups and can bring issues from these expanded community contacts to the committee," said Inspector Curley.

"The old committee didn’t use these contacts as effectively as this new model can.

"Numerous short term committees have been established each year to plan for a number of specific events on Phillip Island, but little coordinated planning has been occurring in relation to other events and broader community safety issues across other parts of Bass Coast.

"This committee will replace many of the other short term planning committees and broaden the focus beyond a few specific events," continued Inspector Curley.

Membership of the committee will include representatives from Victoria Police, CFA, Ambulance Victoria and Bass Coast Shire Council. Other representatives will be invited on an as needs basis.

Mr Laydon explained that the Community Safety Committee will have responsibility for ensuring a coordinated approach to the planning and response to major events and community safety issues.

"Anti-social behaviour is an issue Australia wide and as a community we need to find solutions," said Mr Laydon.

The committee’s first meeting is planned for August coinciding with the planning for the Moto GP and V8 Supercar events in September and October.
