Hazelwood Power Station closure a blow for region

Latrobe City Council will continue to advocate for the community in the wake of the decision by the Board of ENGIE to close Hazelwood Power Station.

"It is with a heavy heart that we have heard the news which confirms the imminent closure of the Hazelwood Power Station," Latrobe City Council CEO Gary Van Driel said.

He said that while there has been considerable speculation that this reality would soon be upon us, it has not served to soften the blow of today’s announcement.

"First and foremost in our thoughts are the workers of the Hazelwood Power Station, their family, friends and loved ones," Mr Van Driel said.

"Their health and wellbeing should be the primary focus of all levels of government.

"Today we understand that there will be considerable shock, distress, sadness and anger.

Their suffering will be felt right across our community and our simple message to them is that we will stand by them. We will not let them be forgotten. We will continue to advocate and lobby on their behalf.

"For more than 90 years, Latrobe City workers have powered our great state. Collectively, they share a proud history and record of achievement which must be recognised, celebrated and used as a platform for continued growth.

"We look forward to securing record State and Federal Government investment in our municipality, as well as a dignified transition for our workers and community and a shared and collective effort to build and enrich the Latrobe City economy.

"As an organisation, Council stands ready to advocate and lobby for a strong, community-led transition.

"It is our position, that the community of Latrobe City must be central to any future considerations.

In recognition of the impact this decision will have on industry, Council and Regional Development Victoria will undertake further consultation and discussions with affected businesses.

"While we are formally without councillors, I have spoken with all successful candidates and they have requested that this matter be the first order of business once the formal statutory processes have been finalised and they have taken the Oath of Office," Mr Van Driel said.

"They all believe that a strong and locally grounded response will be critical."
