Baw Baw Shire Achievement Awards 2005

Baw Baw Shire Council has announced the winners of their Achievement Awards for 2005.

"These Awards are announced annually, and once again the competition was tight," said Mayor, Cr Ruth McDonald.

"Members of the public nominate individual or organisations for the Awards and our judging panel has a very tough time deciding on eventual winners."

The awards are designed to recognise the effort that people or groups put in to their chosen area.

"We not looking so much at what they do, but at the effort they put into it and their level of achievement." said Cr McDonald.

"The Achievement Awards for 2005 cover a range of different activities, some of them very different.

"But every winner has clearly demonstrated a level of achievement that is a cut above the average," said Cr McDonald.

The Awards for 2005 are:

Youth Award
FReeZA Committee

Freeza is a youth initiative of the state government. The local Freeza Committee is a mix of young people and youth related organisations which works to establish positive programs and events of interest to youth. The local Committee has worked hard to organise and run a series of heats in a Battle of the Bands event. The heats have provided a venue and audience for local bands, as well as giving young people young people an alcohol and drug free music event.

The success of the local committee in organising the Battle of the Bands was recognised when the state Freeza organisation awarded the Baw Baw committee the right to host the Gippsland finals for the contest. An impressive achievement for our young committee.

Community Service Award
Wendy Thomas

Wendy Thomas has worked for 11 years as a volunteer helper to students working on the Drouin Secondary College newspaper, "College Knowledge’. Wendy spends four periods each week in class helping students develop their articles and produce the newspaper. Wendy relates well to students and has been there to help on every edition produced since the newspaper first appeared in 1994. In the true spirit of volunteerism, Wendy has continued this involvement even, though her own children left the school seven years ago. Her continued assistance has been deeply appreciated by the school community.

Individual Achievement Award
Belinda Watts

Belinda Watts has done well in a broad range of business and sporting interests. Belinda is founder, co-owner and artistic director of Chumba Concept Salon in Warragul. In just 20 months of business, this hairdressing salon has several business awards including the 2005 Federation Health Gippsland Business of the Year award.

In addition to her notable business achievements, Belinda is also the current Australian caption in the somewhat extreme sport of Underwater Hockey. Belinda was named ‘Most Valuable Player of the Tournament’ while playing in an international tournament in South Africa earlier this year. Belinda also plays basketball and has other recreational interests.

Business Award
Silvia Zorzer

Silvia Zorzer is a second-generation chef schooled in traditional European cooking techniques, so it was no surprise when she decided to open Durante’s restaurant in Drouin. Silvia and Durante’s has quickly established a reputation for a menu and service that is classically simple yet elegantly fashionable. Durante's endeavours to use the finest Gippsland produce to create meals in the finest European tradition. This unique approach is reflected in Silvia’s and Durante’s business success.

Sports Award
David King

David King has established an enviable in the relative new sport of Men’s Netball. David’s skill in this growing sport is such that he has represented the state in the Victorian U/19 Men’s Netball Team, and has been selected as Goal Attack in the Australian U/19 team. David is also active in swimming and athletics.

Sports Award
Adam Fawcett

Over the past 12 months, Adam Fawcett has achieved outstanding success in national and state level competition in equestrian eventing and dressage. Adam achieved second place this year in the Wandin Park horse trails. He also won the Grade 2, Grade 3 and Grade 4 dressage championships held at Logan Park earlier this year. Last year he placed fourth in the Victorian Dressage Club State Championship.

Sports Award
Skye Rees

If basketball is the name of the game then Skye Rees is the name of the player. Skye has had a distinguished junior career at the local level and is now moving to play in major state competitions. Skye has been playing in the Melbourne Championship Competition for six years and has been selected Victorian Country State team, recently moving from the U/16s to U/18s.
