Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) and Latrobe City Council has signed a lease that ensures five EPA monitoring stations will remain in Latrobe Valley until mid-2015 and provide up-to-date air quality information to local communities.

EPA Chief Executive Officer, Nial Finegan, said EPA was committed to supplying air quality data to residents in a consistent and accurate form.

"EPA has a long history of monitoring air quality in the Latrobe Valley," Mr Finegan said.

"Since the Hazelwood fire, EPA installed additional monitoring sites providing data to the community through EPA’s website. This agreement reconfirms these three existing sites and allows for an additional two stations.

"We are pleased to have worked with Latrobe City Council to allow us to maintain our sites at least to the end of the current financial year."

Latrobe City Council Mayor, Councillor Dale Harriman, welcomed the announcement.

"EPA and Council officers worked together to identify the five council-owned sites where the monitoring stations would be located in Traralgon, Moe, Churchill, Morwell and Morwell east," Cr Harriman said.

"Locating these monitoring stations across the municipality was a priority. We have a responsibility to advocate for our community and in the aftermath of the mine fire it has become clear that the community wants assurance that air quality across the municipality is being monitored.

"Council is committed to regularly meeting with the EPA and working with the community, and other stakeholders to ensure that the results of ongoing air monitoring are widely available and understood. With the next fire season just around the corner, residents can now take some comfort from the fact that these air quality monitoring stations will provide data from across the municipality."
