Hazelwood workers’ hardhats find temporary home at Council hq

Latrobe City Council’s corporate headquarters in Morwell will be the temporary home for the Hazelwood workers’ hardhats display. The installation was erected in the forecourt on Wednesday 5 April and will remain until Friday 28 April.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said Council was relieved to be able to step in and allay some of the community angst around the removal of the hats from the power station.

"I believe the workers who left their hats, and the wider community who see the hardhats display as a tangible tribute to the end of an era, will be pleased with this temporary solution. Given the level and nature of community sentiment on the day of Hazelwood’s closure, it makes sense that there should be a place to pause and reflect.

"The worker tributes, left on the hats, are heartfelt and honest. Being able to provide a place where the public can access them is a constructive and valuable part our community’s healing process as we all come to terms with the loss of Hazelwood," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"The pop-up installation will be open for workers and their families, or those who wish to take some time reading the comments on the hats. If there are workers who didn’t get the opportunity to leave their hardhat at the Hazelwood site, but wish to display it now, there will be space for additional hats. A tribute book will also be available at Latrobe City Council offices for people to record their thoughts and memories.

"We are actively working with the local community, including PowerWorks, to find a permanent site for the hardhats display," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
