Mayor’s Message

Wastewater problems have been evident in South Gippsland for a number of years and over the past six months Council has ‘bitten the bullet’ and become proactive in addressing these issues. They are ones that are not going to go away.

Many residents, naturally, have been concerned about the ramifications on their property and its associated value, and are seeking clarification.

It is a complex issue involving a number of government agencies and Council is progressing well within the path of its jurisdiction to provide the strategies for the future. As promised in early July, a specialist Sustainability Officer has recently joined the Council team to focus on these issues.

A Study on ‘Wastewater Management in coastal settlements of Gippsland’ was initiated by a Council / DOTARS funding submission, and the first stage of its findings will be presented this week to two specific markets.

On Thursday, the consultants will address key stakeholders in Traralgon, updating representatives from the EPA, other Gippsland Councils, the Municipal Association of Victoria, Regional Development Victoria, the Gippsland Coastal Board and the Area Consultative Committee among others.

And on Friday morning, the consultants will then present the findings to representatives of South Gippsland community groups and interested residents at Carino’s Conference Centre at 10 am. From 11.30am until 1pm, an Expo of innovative waste treatment technologies will be manned to provide the public with information relating to possible solutions.

This is an opportunity for everyone to keep abreast of developments as we progress toward sustainable outcomes for South Gippsland’s unsewered communities. Over the next few months the Planning Department will be developing wastewater management plans for each settlement in the Shire, and the community will again be invited to participate in the process through local meetings.

With the rapid and exciting growth in new technologies, it is quite likely that some settlements may never need to tap into traditional sewage systems, joining a growing international trend where each household uses sustainable closed systems.

Successful and widely accepted outcomes need community input: we want to see you at our Expo so that together we can learn and make informed decisions.

Let’s embrace the necessary changes and galvanise our combined strength as a community to achieve the best outcomes.
