Elite sports to bounce into Latrobe City
Latrobe City Council has welcomed today’s State Government announcement of major sporting events to visit our region.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said to have both the National Basketball League and Big Bash League clubs to play and coach in Latrobe City was a major coup.Latrobe City is a community that loves its sport, but we know that these visits are also about the social opportunities created when community joins together," Councillor O’Callaghan said.
"Young people meeting their sporting idols has an impact – the sports stars can inspire through their words as well as their sporting successes.
"This series of events could potentially bring more than 2000 people and inject up towards of $620,000 into Latrobe City’s economy.
"We are fast developing a reputation as a go-to regional venue for elite sporting events and we are delighted that the NBL and Big Bash will be playing right here in our municipality. It means our young and aspiring athletes can see their sporting heroes and learn what it takes to make it to the top," Cr O’Callaghan said.
The events will include a three-day pre-season NBL tournament from 7 to 9 September and a men’s Big Bash pre-season match between Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes on 15 December. There will also be school and community clinics.
Funding has been provided as part of the $85 million State Government investment in sports and community infrastructure, events and associated support programs.
