Natural Environment Sustainability Strategy Snapshot Adopted

Latrobe City Council adopted the annual Natural Environment Sustainability Strategy Snapshot Report 2013 at the Council meeting held on Monday 3 June.

By Latrobe City - 7th June 2013 - Back to News

The snapshot highlights the progress and achievements made by Council in 2013 against the Natural Environment Sustainability Strategy, adopted in 2008, which focuses on maintaining and improving the natural environment sustainability.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Sandy Kam, said that some areas had been actioned with defined outcomes achieved, and others had been progressed with ongoing commitments and activities continuing into the future.

"In the past twelve months we have concentrated on actions to reduce Council’s energy consumption, resulting in a measurable cost saving to Council of over $48,000 and over 300 tonne of CO2 emissions annually. This has been achieved by continuing the program of energy saving initiatives such as LED lighting at the Moe Town Hall and Council leisure centres, timers on pool circulating pumps over closed periods at Council outdoor pools, and installation of photovoltaic cells on the Churchill and District Hub.

"We have also continued our participation in events such as Earth Hour, Clean Up Australia Day and National Tree Day demonstrate Council’s commitment to environment sustainability," Cr Kam said.

"One highlight in the report was the official re-opening of the Morwell River Falls, in March, after considerable work was undertaken by volunteers from the Friends of the Morwell River Falls. This is a great example of the community working together to improve one of our best natural assets.

"In essence, the snapshot report allows Council to inform the community of activities that normally go unnoticed, such as forestry coupe compliance audits, review of State and Federal legislation on behalf of the community, involvement in bushland reserve committees of management, advocacy with industry, sustainability education, waste management and on-going roadside weeds management," Cr Kam concluded.
