Cultural Diversity Committee formed to guide Council

Latrobe City has established a Cultural Diversity Reference Committee with significant community membership to oversee the implementation of its Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Action Plan.

The new committee consists of six community members as well as two agency and Latrobe City staff representatives and will be chaired by a councillor.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said a key role of the committee will be to provide advice on ways of improving access to council information, services and facilities for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

"It’s important that all citizens of Latrobe can access the services provided by local government, irrespective of their cultural background and language skills. This committee will help ensure council services are more equitably deliverable to all citizens," Cr Lougheed said.

Cr Lougheed added that he was pleased with the broad make-up of the committee and the amount of interest generated in nominating.

"We have been successful in attracting people from a significant cross-section of our migrant communities, from the groups that have a long history of migrant settlement in Latrobe City, to those who in more recent years have settled from other lands.

"The diversity and calibre of the group enables Council to effectively monitor and update our CALD Action Plan and promote its benefits. We can now look forward to creating a more inclusive and harmonious community that acknowledges and nurtures our diversity," Cr Lougheed said.

"The CALD Action Plan is likely to become increasingly more important to our community, even for those who have been here many years and now speak English quite well.

"We are an ageing society, and as those who settled in the 1950s and 1960s grow older, their English language skills are likely to deteriorate as part of the natural ageing process. It’s therefore very important that we as civic leaders provide as much support as we possibly can to these citizens who have embraced our community, and contributed so much to the way of life we enjoy in the Latrobe Valley today," Cr Lougheed added.
