27Th Annual Victorian State Bottles & Collectables Show

Gippsland MP Peter Hall is hopeful of more funding for nurse practitioners to assist in aged care, after an indication of support from the Aged Care Minister when questioned in Parliament.

By Peter Hall - 10th June 2005 - Back to News

The Nationals MP put the proposition to the Minister, Gavin Jennings, after

Mr Hall had attended an aged care forum in Bunyip.

Outside Parliament, Mr Hall said he was pleased that his proposal had met with some support from the Minister.

"At the forum I attended the desirability of a specialist aged care nurse practitioner working in aged care facilities attracted strong support from all those present," he said. "It seems to make sense that such a position could provide assistance to people in aged care and those people who work in aged care.

"I hope now that the support the Minister expressed in Parliament translates to actual financial support on the ground, for the benefit of everyone in aged care."

Recently in Parliament, Mr Hall asked the Minister: "Does the Victorian government acknowledge the health benefits for aged Victorians and the improved efficiencies to the hospital system that would eventuate if aged care providers were funded to employ a nurse practitioner?"

The Minister described the idea as "a very useful proposition" and said that the breakthrough of nurse practitioner could bridge the gap between the skills that nurses provide and the skills general practitioners bring to the system.

There are three pilot programs operating across the Victorian system: one is in residential aged care, one is in the community sector and one in the acute hospital sector. The programs are designed to assess the benefits of nurse practitioners in each sector.

Mr Hall called on the Government to fast track the proposals for aged care in particular. "From the forum I attended, there is obviously broad support within the sector. The Government can afford to bring nurse practitioners on line very quickly in the aged care sector, because of this broad support and because of the need."
