Dog and cat registrations are due on Monday

Latrobe City Council is reminding all residents that their pet registrations are due this coming Monday, 10 April.

By Latrobe City Council - 5th April 2006 - Back to News

All cats and dogs aged three months or more are required to be registered with their local council. Owners of unregistered animals can be fined $210.

Latrobe City’s manager local laws, Peter Fraser, said that pet owners with previously registered pets should by now have received their renewal notice and many people have already reregistered their pets for 2006/2007.

"However, many of these pet owners may have acquired additional pets during the year, so we ask them to please be sure to check that the details of all pets are listed on the form correctly, and if not, have the details on the form amended," Mr Fraser said.

"If a renewal notice lists a deceased pet or a pet which has been found another home, please complete the appropriate details on the back of the renewal notice. In cases where there are no longer pets needing to be registered at an address, citizens can either return the renewal notice to council with a simple explanation, or just telephone council on 1300 367 700 to have the details changed.

"Every cat and dog aged three months or more in Victoria must be registered with the local council. If pets have been acquired during the year and have reached three months of age but have not been registered to date; owners will not be penalised for failing to register them before now - providing they register them now!" Mr Fraser emphasised.

"Pet registration is an integral part of pet ownership and as such, everyone with a pet has a responsibility. By registering your pet you are ensuring its wellbeing and also your own peace of mind, as registered pets are reunited with their owners quickly. Registration also means pet owners can be notified of the outbreak of prevalent diseases or risks that may affect their pets, and of opportunities for microchipping or other advantageous aspects of pet care," Mr Fraser added.
