Expo For Those Building, Rebuilding Or Renovating In Rural Areas

Latrobe City Council is hosting a ‘Bushfire Recovery and Rebuilding Expo’ between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 31 October 2009 at the Performing Arts Centre, Grey Street, Traralgon. Admission on the day is free.

The Expo is being held primarily to assist all residents living in rural areas, in particular, those rebuilding in the aftermath of the fires, or those who are planning to build or extend their homes in rural areas.

Recent legislation changes require anyone considering rebuilding, renovating or significantly repairing a home, to consider the new building standard introduced in March 2009 (AS3959).

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the Latrobe City Bushfire Recovery and Rebuilding Expo will help people to understand the application of these new standards, and provide practical building product and services information.

"The event will encompass an expo style trade show in the Town Hall, enabling attendees to speak with individual specialists. In the Little Theatre, guest speakers will deliver information throughout the day ranging from sustainable building design, and building legislation advice, right through to practical advice on developing fire bunkers.

"One of the lessons to emerge from the bushfires this year is that fire not only threatens homes and livelihoods in specific ‘bushfire prone zones’ but can impact farms, rural communities, and even urban communities adjacent to rural areas. As such, a large part of our community should consider this expo a must to attend," Cr Price said.

Latrobe City municipal recovery manager, Steve Tong, said the Rebuilding and Recovery Expo is part of Latrobe City Council’s ongoing commitment to assisting people living in a designated bushfire zone, and forms part of Latrobe City’s Municipal Recovery Plan.

"Those attending will be able to tap into a vast amount of advice and ideas being offered by the experts. There will be CFA representatives discussing the new fire rating system and creating fire safety plans for homes; and David Hallet from Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Australian Institute of Architects will discuss architectural services available to home buyers, new home builders and renovators.

"Gary Rowe from Home Building System will deliver useful advice and tips for owner builders; John Shaw from the Building Commission will address rebuilding after the fires and discuss fire bunkers; Jim Darmos from the Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority will discuss the Building Advisory Service; Dr Ronald J Webber from Consumer Affairs will provide practical tips to avoid problems when rebuilding; and Solahart will advise on solar hot water systems.

"The Good Guys Traralgon are sponsoring the event. People affected by the Black Saturday and the Delburn fires can pick up a flyer entitling them to cost (invoice) price for any goods purchased at their Traralgon store valid for two months after the expo. They are also providing electrical goods for giveaways on the day, and are making five $1000 vouchers available as door prizes.

"There will also be children’s entertainment in the form of VIK face painting and appearances from Coco the Clown," Mr Tong added.
