Moe Rail Precinct Revitalisation Project Commences

Latrobe City Council has taken an important step in realising the vision of a revitalised Moe civic centre.

By Latrobe City Council - 11th September 2009 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council, CEO, Paul Buckley said that the delivery of ‘Notices of Intention to Acquire’ to George Street property and business owners this week, was the beginning of a remarkable transformation for the Moe CBD.

"The Moe Activity Centre Plan will revitalise the civic centre creating a modern active community precinct.

"This project will secure the long term future of the Moe CBD and finally give the community a town centre that reflects its hopes and aspirations.

"We believe that the acquisition of the George Street shops is critical to the development of this project.

"The community of Moe is one of the Valley’s most vibrant, proactive, passionate and dedicated," said Mr Buckley.

"It’s fitting that the community will soon have a community precinct which is bright, which provides a mix of active and passive recreation spaces whilst providing opportunities for the community to come together in both formal and informal gatherings."

Mr Buckley said that Council Officers had met with individual property and business owners.

"Fourteen properties have been identified as significant in the overall implementation of the Moe Activity Centre Plan and Rail Precinct Revitalisation.

"Council provided those owners with a notice of intention to acquire which outlines Council’s intention to take possession of the properties in February 2010.

"Property owners received visits from Council and Department of Transport staff to explain the process and stages in relation to the purchase of their property in accordance with the Land Acquisition and Compensation Act (1986)."

Mr Buckley said that the acquisition process would progress in two stages, the first involving notices of intention to acquire to property owners, the second, notices of intention to acquire to businesses.

"Council’s Economic Development Team has been involved to support businesses should they choose to relocate."

Mr Buckley said that this was an exciting time for Moe.

"There is a general sense of anticipation within the community. Residents are ready to see action and this is a clear sign of our intention to move forward with this project."

"In September 2009, the community will be given an opportunity to view and comment on the initial precinct master plan."
