Baw Baw creative arts community invited to paint murals for Bellbird Park Recreation Reserve and Drouin Senior Citizens Hall
Members of Baw Baw's creative arts community are invited to submit an expression of interest for the creation and installation of public art pieces that will enhance two community spaces in Drouin.
The creation and installation of the public art pieces project will see Bellbird Park Recreation Reserve and the Drouin Senior Citizens Hall - two sites currently under restoration to ensure they meet current and future needs of the expanding community - beautified with public artworks.
The artworks will be important as landmarks and place makers, these commissions will be significant as the sites are very public, and will mark the intention for the new facilities
Opportunity for the artists
Council is providing our talented arts community with the opportunity to have their artwork featured within these community spaces with the intention that the artworks will come to be recognised and landmarks and placemakers in the future.
The appointed artists will receive a combined budget of $60,000 for both projects, while shortlisted applicants will receive $1,000 to further develop their concept plans in preparation for the final presentation and interview process.
'Inclusive' is the theme for both public art pieces and it aims to complement the redevelopment works at each site which will improve facilities, enhance accessibility and benefit a greater portion of users within the Shire.
How to apply
Expressions of interest open Monday 30 May and will close by 5pm Friday, 17 June 2022. Each application should consider including the following:
- CV of no more than three pages with descriptions of relevant previous projects
- Photos of current or recent relevant sculptural work
- Up to three A4 pages outlining the intended approach to this project (can be written or graphic or a combination of both)
- Proposed budget
- Project timeline that explains when key activities will occur and when key decisions are required
Expressions of interest can be submitted by email to council's Cultural Development Officer, Melissa Forlano at melissa.forlano@wgac.com.au. For more information, go to Drouin Community Hubs Public Art Installation Expression of Interest website.
Get involved with the project
Mayor Cr Michael Leaney said, "The inclusion of public artwork will add vibrancy and character to these two significant sites that have long histories and community attachment for the people of our Shire."
"These redevelopment plans are vital to address the growing needs of our community and will result in upgraded and improved facilities more suitable to a wider range of uses. I strongly encourage our creative arts community to get involved and take advantage of this opportunity. We look forward to seeing the diverse and incredible artwork concepts that are submitted." Cr Leaney said.
