Extend Deer Hunting In Region’S National Parks - Ingram

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on the State Government to amend the Parks and Crown Land Legislation Amendment (East Gippsland) Bill 2009

To permit the hunting of deer in the Snowy River National Park and proposed new park extensions.

Mr Ingram said deer were a major environmental problem throughout the region.

"These large animals are protected species and hunting is the only action that is currently being used to limit the population," Mr Ingram said.

"This week, I have written to the Minister for Environment, Gavin Jennings, requesting that the Bill before the Parliament be amended to extend the areas available to deer hunting.

"Deer hunting is allowed in a number of existing National Parks, including areas of the Alpine and Mitchell national parks, so this change is not at odds with current practice.

"This is an issue that I have raised on a number of occasions with the government as there are a number of national parks in East Gippsland where deer are a major environmental problem and are causing significant damage.

"Under the legislation before the Parliament, deer hunting will be permitted in one of the proposed new areas (Tara Range Park) with approval of the secretary.

"This area adjoins the southern boundary of the Snowy River National Park, which has some of the highest and most damaging populations of deer in the state, causing significant environmental damage.

"The government must address the threat of deer to our most important natural areas.

"The Upper House should amend this bill to allow the secretary to permit hunting of deer in the Snowy River National Park and in the other new park extensions.

"This would need to be done with seasonal restrictions and other management rules, as are implemented across all areas where deer hunting is permitted.

"I am sure this change would be supported by most stakeholders," Mr Ingram concluded.
