Council Sets Its Sights On Big Picture Planning

Bass Coast Shire Council has welcomed a number of major planning announcements by the Victorian Government.

"The lobbying work that this Council has been doing, particularly with the Gippsland Local Government Network, is certainly paying off," said Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden.

$630,000 for big picture planning in Gippsland

The Minister for Regional and Rural Development, Jacinta Allan, announced $450,000 for four Gippsland councils towards the Creating Better Coastal Places and Spaces in Gippsland project.

The four councils include Bass Coast, South Gippsland, Wellington and East Gippsland. The funding was announced on a dollar for dollar basis, so the four Gippsland councils would need to contribute the same amount to get the full $450,000.

The project aims to finish the work needed to put the Shires’ big picture planning frameworks into full action.

For example, Bass Coast Shire Council could use the funds to finish the detailed big picture planning frameworks for Phillip Island and San Remo. These include the San Remo, Newhaven and Cape Woolamai Structure Plan (already underway) and the Cowes, Silverleaves and Ventnor Structure Plan.

Council could also use the funds to put into action some of the recommendations from the Inverloch Design Framework. The recommendations include doing Inverloch residential and landscape design guidelines, and a traffic management study.

As part of the overall project, the $450,000 would also help carry out the recommendations from the Victorian Government’s Coastal Spaces project for areas between towns.

"We have already put funding towards some of these projects," said Mr Bawden.

"The next stage will be for the four councils to meet and decide how the overall project moves forward."

Ms Allan also announced $180,000 over three years to help the Gippsland Local Government Network put the Gippsland Regional Development Strategy into practice.

"The six Gippsland councils will also contribute $10,000 each," continued Mr Bawden.

"The Strategy sets out actions around areas such as transport, communications, water, agriculture, forestry, education and training, and tourism.

"This project builds on other successful projects where the Gippsland councils have worked together to tackle issues of mutual interest, such as regional tourism," he said.

Planning Minister visits Bass Coast

In addition, this week the State Planning Minister, Justin Madden announced funding of $40,000 to help Council put its planning initiatives into action.

The Minister also agreed to consider fast-tracking the approval of the Wonthaggi Dalyston Structure Plan, so it could be formally put into the Shire’s Planning Scheme.
