No Fireworks In Cowes For Nye

Bass Coast Shire Council has unanimously supported a one year no entertainment trial at Cowes on Phillip Island at New Year’s Eve in an effort to reduce anti-social behaviour.

By Bass Coast - 22nd October 2010 - Back to News

Bass Coast Mayor, Peter Paul, said the trial was suggested by local police as a similar approach to that of Mornington Peninsula.

"When we hold fireworks, we have to close the roads for public safety," said Cr Paul. "This allows people to congregate in the area during the fireworks and well into the night.

"This year, we are going to trial a ‘no entertainment’ approach to NYE to see if problems can be reduced.

"Every year we have more people in town and anti-social behaviour seems to be getting worse.

"Over the past years feedback from residents and reports in the media have revealed how frustrated the community is.

There will be a strong Police presence across Bass Coast this summer.

Random checks will be carried out by Police on vehicles coming across the bridge and onto Phillip Island.

"It’s disappointing that the tradition of fireworks on NYE has been spoilt by the minority," said Cr Paul.

"We welcome people to Bass Coast to enjoy our beaches, beautiful natural environment and world class waves. We ask everyone who comes here to ‘Enjoy it, Don’t spoil it’.

"Every summer the Island has a great atmosphere, helped by the large number of visitors.

"Our aim is to maintain this great feeling and be able to look back fondly at each summer.

"To help reclaim fireworks as a family-friendly feature on our summer calendar, they will be held at this year’s Carols by the Bay on 21 December."

"This should be a fantastic event that all our residents, ratepayers and visitors can enjoy.

Council will review the impact of the trial of No Entertainment on New Years Eve in January 2011.
