Cathedral Range fire – Wilsons Promontory

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 13th February 2009 - Back to News

Last night local residents were briefed at a community meeting held at Yanakie Hall, regarding proposed planned burn operations ahead of the Cathedral Range fire front.

Planned burns were to begin today, however forecast conditions do not fit within burn prescriptions. In particular, Prom specific weather forecasts predict stronger winds varying from south-east to north-east than initially anticipated. Furthermore, ground crews confirmed fuel moisture readings within the plan burn location were high as a result of continued rainfall events.

"We will not undertake any plan burns until conditions fall within our pre-determined fire prescriptions" explains incident controller Denis Matthews. "Although planned burns will not be occurring today, we will continue to prepare in case suitable weather conditions prevail in the days to come".

All planned burns will be postponed until suitable conditions prevail. However, preparation works for planned burns, including work upon containment lines will continue.
