Be Aware Of Snakes

Recent snake sightings have prompted Bass Coast Shire Council to warn residents and visitors to be aware of snakes – especially on beach access tracks.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 5th February 2010 - Back to News

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Peter Paul, said he had a number of calls from concerned residents.

"Snake sightings are normal at this time of year," said Cr Paul.

"If you see one, stay calm and still then slowly walk away from it. Remember – it is as scared of you as you are of it!"

Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and it is illegal to kill them.

"Be aware whenever you’re walking in scrubby or bush areas," said Cr Paul. "Especially around beach access tracks. You are walking through their habitat.

"We suggest you stamp as you walk as they will feel the vibrations and are likely to scuttle off into the bush before you come upon them.

"Most snake bites occur when people are trying to catch or kill a snake."

Snakes also pose a hazard to pets, so supervise your pets closely when walking through bushland or overgrown areas.

To reduce the chance of snakes around your home, keep the grass cut short and do not have any timber or sheets of iron lying around. Avoid walking in your backyard in bare feet. In very hot weather, many snakes become nocturnal and are harder to see and pets are also more vulnerable to snake bite at this time.

"Anyone bitten by a snake should seek medical attention immediately. You should stay calm, and as still as possible. A pressure bandage, clothing or towels torn into strips should be immediately applied to the bite area," said Cr Paul

Go straight to a hospital emergency department for treatment. Advice on snakebite is available from the Poisons Information Centre 24 hours a day on 13 11 26.
