Yarram Planning Amendment Goes to Minister

Wellington Shire Council has finalised and confirmed the planning strategy which will define housing development in Yarram and surrounding districts.

By Wellington Shire - 17th November 2005 - Back to News

The amended proposal has now been sent to the Minister for Planning for final approval.

"We are now at the end of a very detailed consultation and planning process," said Mr Lyndon Webb, Chief Executive Officer for Wellington Shire Council.

"Ministerial approval will make the amendment proposal binding and allow Council to provide certainty for residents and developers wishing to build or subdivide in appropriately zoned areas of Yarram and surrounding districts."

"The effect of this approval will be to open up land for new developments in Yarram and the surrounding areas of Alberton, Woodside, Devon North, Won Wron and Buckley’s Island Road," said Mr Webb.

The amended residential and rural residential strategy plan, officially known as Amendment C24, has been the subject of an extensive review and consultation process including public hearings conducted in Yarram.

"We had some 48 public submissions received as part of the consultation process on the Yarram district’s planning scheme amendment proposal and most of these submissions were positive towards the proposal," said Mr Jason Pullman, Strategic Planner with Wellington Shire Council.

"All submissions were considered by both Council and the government appointed independent review panel in determining the final details of the planning scheme amendment proposal."

The final report of the review panel commended the Council for the quality of the consultative process and the comprehensive analysis undertaken.

"The panel also noted that the planning scheme amendment proposal, once approved, is expected to have a positive social and economic effect on Yarram and surrounding districts," said Mr Pullman.

"They also agreed with Council that it would allow the supply of land in the area to meet demand for at least the next 15 years, and would extend the range of housing choice by providing alternative locations for conventional residential development as well as good opportunities for low density housing and rural residential living," said Mr Pullman.
