Storages Over 40% Full And Rising

East Gippsland Water has reached another milestone in its drive to top up drinking water stocks across the Mitchell River System*, with storages returning to over 44% full for the first time in 16 weeks.

By East Gippsland Water - 18th July 2007 - Back to News

Between 5th and 12th July the storages, which include Woodglen Reservoir, increased from 39.8% to 44.7% full – representing a rise for the week of 4.9%. That means that since early June, when the low point of 28.4% was recorded, levels have gone up by more than 16% in total.

East Gippsland Water’s ongoing operation at Woodglen to clean water from the Mitchell, removing large quantities of soil and bush fire debris, is clearly reaping dividends, as is the extraction of bore water. Ten water clarifiers, along with a number of water settlement dams and bores, are together producing a steady 18 megalitres of high quality water a day (enough to fill approximately 18 Olympic size swimming pools).

East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson, said the Corporation is keen to further reduce the level of water restrictions affecting some 17,000 customers reliant on the Mitchell River System*, at the earliest opportunity.

"There’s no doubt that we’re making very useful gains in our drive to replenish depleted storages", he said, "in spite of everything that’s been thrown at us with the weather over recent weeks.

"The water level in Woodglen Reservoir is climbing, which is a welcome sight and indicates that we are moving firmly in the right direction.

"We moved down from Stage 4 Water Restrictions, the highest level, to Stage 3 at the end of June and will look to downgrade further as soon as our water stocks allow it.

"We greatly appreciate the assistance customers are continuing to provide through water conservation efforts."

Customers are reminded that Stage 3 restrictions continue to apply through the Mitchell River System and are requested to keep saving water where possible.
