Commitment To Gippsland Youth

Advocating for increased participation in higher education, skills and training for young Gippsland people is part of a pledge made by Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe through the Gippsland Youth Commitment (GYC).

By Russell Northe - 25th May 2011 - Back to News

The GYC has been in place for three years, and seeks to create new education and training opportunities for all young Gippsland people aged

15-19 years old.

Through the Baw Baw Latrobe Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN), individuals, businesses and community members make a commitment to action to support the GYC goals and strategy for the benefit of Gippsland’s youth.

Mr Northe said it was important that influential community members take part in the GYC, to help instigate change for the benefit of those in need.

"The Gippsland Youth Commitment is a fantastic initiative. Our youth deserve support and guidance so they can achieve their goals and objectives, and start their lives as young adults as smoothly as possible.

"Education, skills and training are essential; however for some of our most vulnerable young community members, these can be hard avenues to access.

"The GYC provides suitable strategies from a wide range of networks which provide access and support for education and training programs for young people."

Craig Hardy, Industry Liaison Officer, Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN said the Gippsland Youth Commitment, which is sponsored by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD), has partnerships with the Baw Baw Latrobe, Gippsland East and South Gippsland Bass Coast Local Learning and Employment Networks.

"Due to these partnerships, there is now a solid foundation for young Gippsland people aged 15 – 19 years old.

"The initiative is strongly supported by the Gippsland Regional Management Forum (RMF) who understands that it will provide great support for the region’s economic development. GYC partners from local business, industry and Government departments make ‘Commitments to Action’ over a five year cycle and work together to improve planning that allows better opportunities for young people

"The Gippsland Youth Commitment provides an opportunity to strengthen the way organisations and business across various sectors work together in the planning for, and the provision of education and training that supports both individual and regional growth" Mr Hardy said.
