The free concert will be held following an intensive two-day orchestral workshop with the secondary students taking place on Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 March at Lavalla Catholic College, Traralgon.

The 2005 mOVe! workshops have been made open to talented music students learning orchestral instruments.

Almost 50 secondary students from schools in the region will be joined by conductor John Argyle and players from Orchestra Victoria. Orchestra Victoria will send 11 of their full time players, with each section of the Orchestra represented; violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe/bassoon, clarinet, French horn, trumpet, trombone/tuba and percussion.

Students will develop their ensemble playing and instrumental techniques rehearsing a number of orchestral works. They will also spend time separated into their instrument ‘families’ for small group tutorials.

Following the success of last year’s workshops, Peter Garnick, Managing Director of Orchestra Victoria said that coming back to Latrobe to work with such talented students would be a pleasure.

"It is wonderful to see the return of many students who worked with us last year and some new faces for these workshops. Tracking their progress, we see a maturity and growth in their confidence and playing," Mr Garnick said.

Emily Travis a young violinist from Bairnsdale Secondary College travelled more than 100 kilometres each way to participate in the Traralgon workshop last year.

"This was my first chance to play with a full orchestra. It was definitely a worthwhile experience for me and the other students who participated," Ms Travis added.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed emphasised the importance of the mOVe! workshops to students in the area.

"These workshops provide students with a unique opportunity to work with professional performers close to home and at no cost to the student and their families. This provides all talented music students with the same opportunity to develop and mature in their performing and playing," Cr Lougheed said.

Bookings for the concert are essential. For further information telephone 9694 3669.

The Orchestra Victoria mOVe! workshops form part of the Orchestra’s successful Regional Program and aim to provide students from regional Victoria with the type of opportunity that is usually available only in metropolitan Melbourne.

The 2005 Community Program is proudly supported by The Australia Council, Arts Victoria, The Estate of the Late George Adams/Tattersall’s, The Gandel Charitable Trust, The Myer Foundation, Helen Macpherson Smith Trust, William Buckland Foundation, The Jack Brockhoff Foundation, The Grosvenor Settlement, The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust (The Eldon & Anne Foote Trust), City of Greater Bendigo, Latrobe City Council, Mildura Rural City Council, City of Greater Shepparton and Horsham Rural Council.
